All hail the hero piece

Having just one feature piece in a room creates a strong focal point and immediately draws your eye to the space. It might be a statement chair or sofa in an avant-garde shape, placed smack-bang in the centre of the room, commanding your attention. Or maybe it’s a striking, oversized pendant light over your dining table. It might even be a grand mirror placed at the end of a hallway to make your space appear more generous. In the bedrooms, it could be a nightstand bed, modern canopy bed or upholstered bedhead. And in smaller spaces, it could be something as simple as a cosy corner chair with a plump decorative cushion. Balance is key, so always remember – less is more. Too many pieces can feel overwhelming. It only takes one show-stopper to make a statement in a room.

Colour for character

White or neutrals on walls is pretty common in homes, and for good reason. As well as making your home feel light, bright and airy, these tones create the perfect blank canvas to add pops of colour with your furniture and decorative pieces.

Bringing unexpected colour to your space can transform the entire feeling of your home, instantly adding drama and warmth. It might be as simple as a blush coloured armchair in your lounge. Think a navy hued desk in your study nook, a deep emerald console table in your hallway or a marigold cushion on your white sofa. And simply introducing a moment or two with pieces in black helps to ground your space and creates a strong focal point. 

Bring your walls to life

Say goodbye to lacklustre walls! Bringing life to your walls with art, wallpaper or texture adds unforgettable character and also tells the story of who is living there.

A gallery wall of eye-catching artworks in minimal frames (like black, white or blonde) makes for a bright statement. Or if you have a larger piece of art, pop that in pride of place as a standalone hero piece.      

And when we say wallpaper, we don’t mean the daggy ones your grandma had in her house. Today’s wallpapers make a high style impact, with lots of choices in graphic, geometric and nature-inspired patterns. Used in larger spaces, they add a sense of grandeur and in smaller spaces like a powder room, the prints pack a real punch.

Some rugs are so beautiful, they are truly woven works of art. Dismissing them as a mere floor covering seems a tragedy. A rug hung high on a wall brings real, rich texture, warmth and colour. Go big, bold and shaggy for a striking statement, or neutral and understated for a more restrained finish.
